Wanderlust: Kefalonia

If you follow me on Instagram you may have noticed I’ve fallen completely in love with the beautiful Kefalonia.

Kefalonia has been part of my life for a long time even though I’d never been there. My grandparents have been going on holiday there for as long as I can remember (and smuggling back honey cakes, no wonder I’m addicted to the stuff). This year they celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary and invited the rest of the family along to join them.

It might not have the picture perfect white and blue buildings associated with some Greek islands but Kefalonia is stunning, full of colour and light. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a holiday that involves little more than chilling on the beach reading a book and drinking cocktails but I definitely needed the time out. We did make time for some walking and exploring the island too.

We stayed at Hotel Summery in Lixouri, which is definitely a quieter part of the island (but with lots of lovely restaurants). My grandparents have been staying at the hotel for almost 20 years so all the staff are like family to them – and made their celebrations for their anniversary feel really special. The hotel was perfect for us with a pool in a beautiful garden right on the beach so I could cool off in the sea while Mr H cooled off in the pool.

Our room had a gorgeous view across the bay to Argostoli and Mount Aenos and I couldn’t resist getting up early several mornings to enjoy a swim while the sun came up.

I have completely fallen in love with the island, not just for the stunning scenery but also for the friendly people, good food and relaxed atmosphere, so much so we’ve already booked to go again next year.
